Кабуки-тё

This is the Kabukicho district, often called the red-light district. Its alleyways hide many sex shops, love hotels with hourly rates, venues for peep shows, strip clubs and brothels. It’s important to note that in Japan only certain types of sexual services are prohibited; many establishments circumvent restrictions by offering services that are not formally banned, such as massages, intimate shows, or paid company with hostesses. In short, the sex industry in Kabukicho exists in a kind of legal gray zone, and the area is also under organized-crime influence. Many venues are aimed at locals — you’ll often see “Japanese only” signs on doors, excluding at least those who don’t speak the language.
