Soba no Mi Ikkanjin (そばの実 一閑人) mills its own buckwheat and serves two distinct soba styles that you can order side by side. Genbiki is stone-ground with the black husk, giving a coarse, deeply aromatic noodle served with grated daikon. Kikouchi is a silky 100% buckwheat noodle served with fresh wasabi and fine French salt. Meals end with unusually thick, almost porridge-like sobayu and a free seasonal dessert, often a milk or hojicha pudding. The restaurant was selected for Tabelog's Soba "Tabelog 100" in 2022 and for the EAST edition in 2025.

Almost every review praises the noodles, the genbiki above all. Sobagaki, a soft buckwheat dumpling, is repeatedly called the best reviewers have eaten. Other frequent favourites are tororo soba with grated yam, natto soba, cold oroshi soba with shrimp-miso, sudachi soba in summer, miso-marinated grilled shrimp and beef tongue. Reviewers also mention the clean, newly renovated wooden room and the kind staff.

The main complaint is the wait. One to two hours is common, food can take more than 30 minutes after ordering, and there is no phone signal while you wait. Genbiki often sells out by midday, and late arrivals may be offered udon instead. A few reviewers found the soba ordinary for the hype or the portions small. Some also found the staff curt at busy times or the smoking spot too close to the waiting bench.

Reviewers in 2024–2026 paid around ¥1,000–1,100 for kikouchi or genbiki seiro (cold noodles) and ¥600 plus tax for a refill. Tororo or natto soba cost ¥1,300 plus tax, cold oroshi soba ¥1,650 and duck soba ¥2,000. Sobagaki was ¥1,320, with a two-portion minimum, and three miso-grilled shrimp were ¥818. Lunch typically costs ¥1,000–1,999 and dinner ¥4,000–4,999. The reviews give no figures for the dinner courses.

Reviewers consider it good value. They see ¥1,000–1,300 for handmade soba of this standard, with sobayu and dessert included, as fair to cheap. Portions are small, so most people order a refill.

  • Getting there: rural location near Lake Tanuki, about 30 minutes by car from Fujinomiya Station. A car is effectively required, and parking is available.
  • Booking: lunch cannot be reserved. Just turn up and write your name on the board by the door, ideally 30–60 minutes before the 11:00 opening. On busy days the list starts as early as 9:00. Dinner (Fri–Sun) is by reservation only, and tempura is served only at dinner.
  • Waiting: names are called over an outdoor speaker, and there is no mobile signal or wifi. The restaurant may close once the noodles run out, so order your refill with your first order.
  • Payment: cash only. Credit cards, electronic money and QR payments are not accepted, and no receipt is issued.
  • Children: preschool children (6 and under) are not admitted at lunch.
  • Seating: 20 seats, mostly on tatami, plus a counter and one sunken-floor table. Shoes come off, and there are no private rooms.
  • Smoking: non-smoking inside.
  • Language: the menu is in Japanese with photos. An English-speaking visitor ordered from it without difficulty.
  • Drinks: sake, shochu and wine.
