Attractions — Takayama

A little off the city center is a shrine considered one of the oldest Shinto sanctuaries — it was founded in the 5th century. It is especially beautiful in autumn, during the chrysanthemum season.

For Japanese people onsens are as much a place to relax as a banya is for Russians. They are natural hot springs, especially pleasant after long walks. Tenryo-no-yu is located in the Green Hotel, but you don't have to be a guest to visit. A small hot spring pool is outdoors but covered by a roof. Admission is 1,500 yen; towel, slippers and toiletries are included. Swimsuits are not allowed — everyone bathes nude. Some onsens prohibit visible tattoos — check in advance; special adhesive patches are sold to cover them. Drinking water is usually available in the bathing area, but it's better to bring your own bottle. And don't forget to try banana- or melon-flavored milk after the onsen — Japanese people consider it the perfect way to finish the bathing ritual. Vending machines with milk in different flavors are often found at the exit.

Every morning in Takayama a small market operates where you can find everything from souvenirs to flowers and fresh fruit and vegetables. Afterwards you can stroll through the town center — some houses date back to the Edo period.

You can get from Takayama to Shirakawa-go by bus departing from the Nohi Bus Center. The trip takes about 50 minutes; a one-way ticket costs ¥2,800. Tickets must be booked online in advance, especially during peak season.
