For over 70 years, Chiba Ya (千葉屋) has perfected just two things, earning a legendary reputation among locals in Asakusa. This small, takeout-only window is dedicated to sweet potato snacks, executed with a consistency that draws queues daily. The main attraction is the daigaku-imo, or 'university imo'. These are large, chunky pieces of sweet potato, fried to create a crisp skin while the inside remains wonderfully moist and fluffy. They are then coated in a secret-recipe syrup that reviewers praise for its depth—sweet but not cloying, with a subtle salty note that makes them incredibly moreish.

The second specialty is kiriage (切揚), thin, crunchy slices of fried sweet potato that offer a completely different texture. Guests find them addictive and they often sell out early in the day. Across the board, reviewers call Chiba Ya's products the best of their kind they have ever tasted, highlighting the perfect balance of sweetness and the satisfying contrast of textures.

Prices are very reasonable, reinforcing its status as a local favourite. Reviewers in 2024–2026 reported paying around ¥920–¥940 for a 400g box of daigaku-imo, or ¥460–¥500 for a 200g portion. The crunchy kiriage slices were about ¥600 for 200g. Portions are considered generous, making it an excellent and affordable souvenir or a satisfying snack while exploring the area. The only recurring issues are practical: the popular kiriage can sell out, sometimes with purchase limits on weekends, and the delicious syrup is sticky, so it's wise to have napkins or chopsticks handy.

  • Getting There: Chiba Ya is a 4-minute walk from Asakusa Station on the TX line, or a 15-minute walk from Asakusa Station on the Toei Asakusa and Tokyo Metro Ginza lines. It is also right by the 'Oku Asakusa' Toei bus stop.
  • Payment: Cash only. Credit cards, electronic money, and QR code payments are not accepted.
  • Bookings: Reservations are not available. It is walk-in only, and you should expect a short queue at peak times.
  • Seating: This is a takeout window only, with no seating available.
  • Good to Know: Children are welcome. The shop is non-smoking. There is no dedicated parking, but coin-operated parking is available nearby.
