Ise Gen (いせ源) is Tokyo’s longest-running restaurant specializing in ankō (anglerfish), serving its signature dishes in a beautifully preserved wooden building from 1930 that is now a designated historical property. The experience revolves around the 名代あんこう鍋 (nadai ankō-nabe), a rich, soy-based hot pot that showcases the fish.

Diners consistently praise the quality of the ankō, especially the kimo (liver), which is served either cooked or as creamy kimo-sashi (raw liver sashimi). The kitchen skillfully uses every part of the fish, from the skin to the roe, often as part of multi-course meals. The meal traditionally concludes with ojiya, a savory rice porridge made with the remaining broth from the pot. While the attentive staff and atmospheric tatami rooms are highlights, some guests have noted that service can feel rushed and the broth's strong, sweet flavor may not suit all palates. Seating can also feel cramped during busy periods.

Despite its premium pricing, most find Ise Gen offers good value for a unique and expertly executed meal. Expect dinner to cost between ¥10,000 and ¥14,999 per person. Reviewers recently paid ¥10,000 for the 'Minamoto' course and ¥12,000 for the 'Irodori' course. A la carte items include kimo sashimi for around ¥1,800 and the ankō-nabe for about ¥4,000. Note that a 10% service charge is added in the evening, and choosing chair seating incurs an extra fee.

  • Getting There: Ise Gen is a 2-minute walk from Awajicho Station (Exit A3) on the Marunouchi Line or Ogawamachi Station (Exit A3) on the Toei Shinjuku Line. It is also a 5-minute walk from JR Kanda Station or JR Akihabara Station.
  • Reservations: Booking ahead is recommended, especially for dinner during the peak ankō season from November to March. Walk-ins may be possible at non-peak times.
  • Seating: The primary seating is on tatami mats. Table seating with chairs is available but costs an additional fee of ¥2,000 per group. The historic building has steep stairs and no elevator.
  • Payment: Major credit cards (Visa, Master, JCB, Amex, Diners) and QR code payments are accepted. Electronic money is not.
  • Charges: A 10% service charge applies for dinner (after 16:00).
  • Dress Code: Guests are asked to refrain from wearing strong perfumes. Shoes must be removed at the entrance.
  • Children: Children of all ages are welcome.
  • Smoking & Parking: The entire restaurant is non-smoking. No parking is available.
