Murayama Mangetsu Udon (村山 満月うどん) is a celebrated restaurant in the Tokyo suburb of Musashimurayama, dedicated to perfecting the local style of udon known as Musashino or Murayama Kate-udon. What sets it apart is the noodle itself: exceptionally thick and firm, with a pronounced whole-grain character and a powerful chew that many reviewers describe as 'shockingly good'. These robust noodles are the perfect vehicle for the shop's rich, layered dipping broths.
Guests consistently praise the two main dipping sauces. The nikujiru is a savoury, umami-packed broth with pork and mushrooms, while the 'mantan' offers a contrasting flavour profile of sesame and chilli oil. Many opt for the 'double tsuke-jiru' to enjoy both. The generous portions and ability to customize noodle thickness, firmness, and size are also highlights. Popular side orders include maitake (mushroom) tempura and kashiwa (chicken) tempura. The main criticisms are practical: expect long queues of 15–40 minutes and potential stress finding a parking spot. A few diners also note that the extreme firmness of the noodles may not be to everyone's taste.
The value is widely considered excellent. Reviewers in 2024 paid around ¥880 for the Nikujiru Tsuke-udon and ¥1,280 for a set with two dipping sauces. Tempura pieces like kashiwa-ten were around ¥220. The typical spend for a satisfying lunch is between ¥1,000 and ¥1,999, a price many feel would be much higher for this quality in central Tokyo.
