Rokubou Tantanmen (六坊担担面) is a specialist shop dedicated to one thing: shirunashi, or soupless, tantanmen. Located just a few minutes from Ikebukuro Station, this tiny, focused counter serves bowls renowned for their intense flavour and satisfying texture. The core of the dish is a thick, rich sauce of sesame paste, chili oil, and numbing Sichuan flower pepper (huajiao) that clings to every strand of the chewy noodles.

Guests consistently praise the depth of flavour, choosing between two main styles: a Japanese-style version and the more traditional Chengdu-style, known for its pronounced numbing quality. You customise your bowl by selecting the level of spiciness and shibire (numbness), typically on a scale of one to five. The bowls are topped with seasoned ground meat, small prawns for texture, and can be enhanced with add-ons like tender braised pork (kakuni) or fresh cilantro.

While the bold, salty, and rich profile is a highlight for most, a few find it overwhelming. The universally recommended move is to order a small bowl of rice to mix into the leftover sauce, a delicious and essential part of the experience. Reviewers recently paid around ¥950–¥1,050 for the Chengdu-style soupless tantanmen and ¥1,100 for the Japanese-style version. With toppings, a meal typically costs between ¥1,000 and ¥1,400, which most feel is excellent value for the quality.
