Shokudo Wata (食堂わた) brings the precision of high-end dining to the relaxed format of a neighbourhood diner, or shokudo. The owner, who trained at the Michelin-starred Akasaka Ogino, serves dishes that showcase kaiseki-level technique in a casual, counter-focused setting in Shinjuku. The restaurant is celebrated for two things in particular: its seasonal clay-pot rice (donabe gohan) and an exceptionally popular lunch set.
The lunch special is the obanzai teishoku, a beautiful set of about ten small, seasonal dishes presented in a woven basket. Reviewers consistently praise its quality and variety, but with only 10–15 servings available each day, it sells out quickly, often to a queue that forms 30 to 60 minutes before opening. Other standout dishes include very fresh sashimi, crisp horse mackerel cutlets (aji-furai), and charcoal-grilled specialities. At dinner, the focus shifts to à la carte items and seasonal donabe gohan, with past creations including firefly squid with bamboo shoots or hairtail fish with corn.
The main challenge is availability. Guests strongly advise arriving very early for a chance at the lunch set. Dinner reservations are highly recommended, as the small space is often fully booked. While the menu is primarily in Japanese, staff are described as welcoming and helpful to non-Japanese speakers. Reviewers recently paid around ¥1,800 for the obanzai teishoku and ¥1,300 for the aji-furai teishoku. Dinner is more of a splurge, typically ¥10,000–¥14,999 per person, with seasonal rice pots like salmon and ikura costing around ¥3,800. The quality is widely considered excellent value for lunch and fair for dinner.
