Kikyo Ya Honsha (桔梗屋 本社) is not just a shop, but the working factory and spiritual home of one of Japan's most beloved confections: Shingen-mochi. Located in Fuefuki, Yamanashi, it has become a major tourist destination, drawing crowds for its unique visitor experiences. The most famous of these is the tsume-houdai, a high-energy, all-you-can-pack event where visitors try to stuff as many Shingen-mochi as possible into a small bag for a fixed price.
Beyond the event, the sweets themselves are the main attraction. Reviewers consistently praise the signature Kikyo Shingen Mochi for its soft, chewy texture, generously coated in nutty kinako (roasted soybean flour) and served with rich kuromitsu (black sugar syrup). The factory cafe faithfully reproduces this flavour combination in its ice cream offerings, with the Kikyo Shingen Soft (soft serve), Shingen Shake, and gelato all earning high marks for their rich and authentic taste. The on-site outlet store is also a highlight, offering bargains on sweets, with some items reportedly costing as little as ¥80.
The main drawback noted by visitors is logistics. The immense popularity of the tsume-houdai event means that tickets, which are distributed on-site, can sell out extremely early in the morning—reviewers report them being gone between 4:00 AM and 7:40 AM. Weekends and holidays bring heavy crowds and tour buses, often leading to full car parks and a bustling, sometimes chaotic, atmosphere. Some visitors also mentioned occasional service lapses and that outlet items tend to sell out before noon.
Despite the crowds, reviewers find Kikyo Ya Honsha to offer excellent value. The typical spend is under ¥1,000. Recent visitors paid around ¥600–¥630 for a Kikyo Shingen Soft, ¥550 for a large Shingen Shake, and just ¥220 for the tsume-houdai packing event. Given the quality and the unique experience, most feel the only real cost is the time required to navigate the crowds.
