Miura Udon is a local institution in Fujiyoshida, credited with originating its own lineage of Yoshida-style udon, known as 'Miura-kei'. The main event is the noodles: handmade, exceptionally thick, and served with an intensely firm, chewy texture that locals call 'washi-washi'. They come in a distinctive broth blending fish stock with miso and soy, traditionally topped with sweet-simmered horse meat (馬肉, baniku), a regional specialty.
Diners consistently praise the generous portions and low prices, with the signature Meat Udon (肉うどん) being the most popular order. Other favourites include the Meat and Wakame (肉わかめ) and the dipping-style Meat Tsukemen (肉つけうどん). Reviewers note the satisfying, nutty flavour of the broth and appreciate the tabletop condiments like suridane (chilli-sesame paste) and tenkasu (tempura bits) for customising the taste. A typical lunch costs well under ¥1,000, with reviewers in 2024–2026 paying around ¥600 for a medium Meat Udon and ¥700 for a Meat Udon with egg (肉月見うどん).
The defining characteristic—the noodle texture—is also the most divisive point; while many seek it out for its extreme firmness, others find it simply too hard. The dining experience is traditional and no-frills: seating is exclusively on tatami mats at low, shared tables, which can be uncomfortable for some. Expect queues, especially at peak lunchtimes, and a menu primarily in Japanese.
Despite these practicalities, Miura Udon (みうらうどん) offers excellent value and is considered a worthwhile stop for anyone seeking an authentic, unpretentious taste of one of Japan's most distinctive regional udon styles.
