Hana Ichi (花いち) is a husband-and-wife counter that has been cooking in an unsigned old house on a residential street in Nagoya's Kodama district since 1983. You take off your shoes and sit at a sunken counter. There is no set course. Instead, you order à la carte from a brush-written menu that is numbered nightly and now runs past 9,800 editions. Everything is made to order. For the tenmusu, the shrimp-tempura rice ball Nagoya is known for, the shrimp is peeled only after you order, and the rice is cooked once a day. The hanpen fish cake is ground in a mortar and fried in front of you. The restaurant has won a Tabelog Award every year from 2020 to 2026.

Nearly every review calls the tenmusu the best the writer has eaten, and regulars order five or more. Other recurring favourites include burdock-studded hanpen and a barely set dashimaki omelette. Reviewers also praise sashimi such as tai no shimofuri (scalded sea bream), beef-and-myoga sukiyaki and kakuya, a finely shredded pickle salad. The squid and dried sweet-potato tempura come up often too. The couple's warmth is mentioned again and again.

Complaints are minor. Rice runs out late in the evening, so tenmusu orders are capped. The counter is narrow, a television plays, and the door has no sign.

The menu shows no prices, so individual dish prices are not documented. Reviewers in 2023–2026 reported totals instead:

  • around ¥17,000 for 17 dishes plus drinks
  • ¥19,050–19,380 for a dozen-plus dishes
  • ¥43,700 for two people with beer and sake

The listing gives a typical dinner spend of ¥10,000–14,999, while review-based averages sit at ¥15,000–19,999. There is no lunch service. Reviewers are emphatic about value: they say this volume and quality would cost far more at comparable kappō counters.

  • Getting there: 9 minutes (700 m) on foot from Joshin Station, Exit 6, on the Tsurumai Line. Alternatively, it is 2 minutes from the Kodama-cho bus stop on the Meieki 13 line. There is no signboard, only a plaque reading 不触不味.
  • Booking: Reservation only, and the restaurant currently accepts no new reservations. Walk-ins are not possible. Reviewers report bookings running years ahead and say that from 2027 reservations will open one month in advance. Phone: 052-524-2876.
  • Hours: Mon, Tue, Thu–Sun 17:00–22:00, closed Wednesday. Dinner only.
  • Payment: Cash only. Credit cards, electronic money and QR payments are not accepted.
  • Seats: 10 in total: 6 at the counter and 4 in a tatami room. The private room at the back seats 4, and the whole venue can be hired for up to 20.
  • House rules: Shoes off. Non-smoking.
  • Parking: 2 spaces in a lot about 50 m north of the restaurant.
  • Language: The menu is handwritten in Japanese, with no English and no prices. A Japanese-speaking companion is near-essential.
  • Future: The owners are elderly and have signalled that the restaurant's future is uncertain.
