Kurobuta Tonkatsu Kuromatsu (黒豚とんかつ くろまつ) has earned a reputation as one of Fukuoka's top destinations for tonkatsu, focusing exclusively on high-grade kurobuta (black pork) sourced from contract farms in Kagoshima. The meat is chilled and aged to enhance its flavour and tenderness, then coated in a light, exceptionally crisp panko batter. The experience is guided by a recommended tasting sequence that reviewers consistently praise: first a piece plain, then with salt and wasabi, and finally with the house tonkatsu sauce.

The star of the menu is the thick-cut rib roast, or kurobuta atsu-giri rib-roast katsu gozen. Diners describe the pork as remarkably juicy and tender. Other popular choices include the kurobuta loin and fillet katsu gozen, a combination set, and the tojinai hire katsu don, a fillet cutlet bowl. Meals are accompanied by fluffy Tsuya-hime rice and shredded cabbage, with free refills available. The friendly staff and counter-focused layout also make it a comfortable spot for solo diners.

While most reviews are glowing, some guests have reported inconsistency. A few found their portions to be overly fatty or slightly overcooked and dry. Occasional timing issues have also resulted in some cutlets arriving lukewarm. Lunch sets are typically priced between ¥1,000 and ¥1,999. Reviewers recently paid around ¥3,000 for the thick-cut rib roast set and ¥2,500 for the loin and fillet combination. Most diners feel the quality justifies the price, considering it a worthwhile splurge, though the experience can feel less valuable when the cooking is not at its best.

  • Getting There: Kurobuta Tonkatsu Kuromatsu is on the 1st floor of the Eito Building Daimyo. It's a 5-minute walk from Nishitetsu Fukuoka (Tenjin) Station or a 2-minute walk from Exit 5 of Akasaka Subway Station.
