Iwamura Momijiya (岩村もみじ屋) is one of the most historic producers of momiji manju, Miyajima's famous maple-leaf-shaped cakes. The shop is credited as the originator of the tsubu-an (chunky red bean paste) filling, a style now beloved across Japan. What makes a visit special is that the cakes are often baked to order right in front of you. You can watch the process through a window and receive a warm, fragrant manju straight from the iron mold—a completely different experience from a pre-packaged souvenir.

Guests consistently praise the texture of the cakes, describing them as warm, fluffy, and perfectly moist, with a gently sweet red bean filling that isn't overpowering. Both the chunky tsubu-an (つぶあん) and the smooth koshi-an (こしあん) fillings receive high marks. Many visitors appreciate that you can buy single pieces to eat immediately, often with a complimentary cup of tea, and enjoy them on the benches opposite the shop. The experience is frequently highlighted as a welcoming one for international tourists.

The main downsides are practical: the shop is popular, so expect lines during peak sightseeing hours, and popular flavours can sell out later in the day. A few visitors hoping for modern, novelty flavours were disappointed by the traditional two-item menu, and on very rare occasions, some found the staff to be brusque.

As a snack, prices are very reasonable, with a typical spend under ¥999. Reviewers in 2023–2026 reported single pieces cost around ¥120–¥140. For souvenirs, a six-pack was noted at ¥600–¥840, and an 18-piece box at ¥1,920. The freshly baked cakes are considered excellent value; just be aware that the boxed versions are best enjoyed the same day for peak quality.
