CAPSULE MONSTER (カプセルモンスター) is a takeout pâtisserie in room 503 of the Shatoru Reve building, an old apartment block in central Sapporo whose rooms have been turned into small shops. Its signature is buttercream made with Calpis butter, a prized Japanese cultured butter. The cream is rich, yet it melts cleanly and never turns cloying. One reviewer wrote that it changed their whole idea of buttercream cake. The second draw is a wall of financiers in more than a dozen flavours, made with rice flour and gluten-free. Tabelog has selected the shop for its Sweets EAST "Tabelog 100" six times, most recently in 2026.
Two cakes dominate the reviews. The first is the fraisier, a strawberry cake. The second is the monstre: brown-butter and mascarpone buttercream on a pistachio macaron base with raspberry jam. Reviewers often call one or the other the best cake they have eaten. The fromage, an airy soufflé cheesecake, also recurs, as do the macadamia and royaltine cakes. Among the financiers, matcha, pistachio, chocolate and honey draw the most praise. Staff are consistently described as friendly.
The criticisms are modest. A few reviewers found the cookies underwhelming for the price, and a couple preferred the nut cakes to the fruit ones. One thought the canelés were hard. Popular cakes may be sold out or not yet on the shelf. The building is easy to walk past, and the narrow shop holds about three groups at a time.
Reviewers in 2024–2026 paid the following:
- Fraisier: around ¥550–590
- Monstre: ¥590
- Fromage: ¥400
- Financiers: ¥220–240 each, or ¥1,640 for a box of six
- Canelé: ¥340
Cakes generally run ¥400–600. The listing puts the typical spend at ¥1,000–1,999. As a cake shop open 11:00–19:00, it has no separate lunch or dinner pricing. Reviewers consistently call this good value for the quality. The cookies are the one item some felt were overpriced.
