Honkaku Sanuki Udon Honoka (本格さぬきうどん 穂乃香) has built a formidable reputation in Amagasaki for one thing: its incredibly thick, firm, and chewy hand-made noodles. Known locally as gōmen (剛麺), or “robust noodles,” they are made in-house and are the star of every bowl. The signature dish that defines the experience is the meat udon (肉うどん, niku udon), piled high with a generous portion of sweet and savory beef that perfectly complements the rich dashi broth, a blend of iriko (dried sardines) and katsuobushi (bonito flakes).
Guests consistently praise the distinctive, satisfyingly chewy texture of the noodles, the speedy service, and the remarkably low prices. Besides the famous meat udon, other popular choices include a simple cold kake udon, the stamina bukkake topped with beef and kimchi, and a hearty curry udon. The portions are famously large, offering outstanding value. However, the noodles themselves can be divisive; some diners find their extreme chewiness tiring to eat. Another common point of criticism is the self-serve tempura, which is often not freshly fried and can be lukewarm or oily.
The value for money is exceptional, with a typical meal costing under ¥1,000. Reviewers in 2024–2026 reported paying ¥380–¥430 for a cold kake udon and ¥720–¥930 for the signature meat udon. Individual tempura pieces like egg or chikuwa (fish cake) cost around ¥140–¥180. Given the hit-or-miss quality of the tempura, the best value is found in the udon itself.
