Tabelog ratingShin Chan (新ちゃん) is an institution in Amagasaki, celebrated for one thing above all: its gyoza. The dumplings are prepared using a distinctive technique where they are first steamed and then fried in lard, resulting in a wrapper that is perfectly crispy and golden on the bottom, yet soft and chewy on top. The filling is juicy, garlicky, and packed with vegetables. Order four or more servings, and they often arrive arranged in a beautiful circular 'flower'. The shop's old-school fried rice, or 焼めし (yakimeshi), is another widely praised classic.
Run by its long-time owners, the restaurant is known for its warm, personal service. Besides the signature gyoza and fried rice, guests frequently recommend the various yakisoba noodle dishes and the simple water gyoza. However, getting a seat is a challenge. The tiny, seven-seat counter-only space means long waits are inevitable, and the shop operates on a numbered ticket system (整理券). It can also get uncomfortably hot in summer due to a lack of air conditioning.
Despite the practical hurdles, reviewers almost uniformly call Shin Chan excellent value. Recent visitors in 2024–2026 paid around ¥300 for a serving of six gyoza and about ¥500 for fried rice or yakisoba. A bottle of beer costs around ¥600, and a satisfying meal can easily be had for under ¥1,500. The only real costs are time and a bit of discomfort.
- Booking: Reservations are not accepted. You must get a numbered ticket (整理券) on-site. Distribution begins at 10:00 AM, but queues form much earlier and tickets for the day can run out within an hour.
- Access: A 7-minute walk from Hanshin Amagasaki Station.
- Payment: Cash only. Credit cards, electronic money, and QR code payments are not accepted.
- Seating: There are only 7 counter seats. Seating time is often limited to around 60 minutes.
- Practical Notes: The restaurant has no air conditioning (fans are used in summer) and no customer restrooms. Opening hours are notoriously irregular, with both planned and sudden closures. It is essential to check locally before making a trip.
- Children: Children are welcome.
- Parking: No dedicated parking, but a paid car park is available nearby.
