Karapincha (カラピンチャ) is run by a Japanese couple who trained under a renowned Sri Lankan chef. Sri Lankan visitors describe their rice and curry as some of the most authentic they have eaten. Each plate is a ring of weekly-changing vegetable sides, such as lentil curry, coconut-tossed greens and papadam, set around rice, with your chosen curry served separately. You mix everything together as you eat, and that mixing is the point of the meal. The restaurant has been named to Tabelog's "Tabelog 100" lists for curry and Asian/ethnic cuisine repeatedly since 2017.

Reviewers almost all praise the mixing style and the layered spicing. The shrimp curry, in a mellow coconut sauce, is the most frequent favourite. The chicken curry is spicier, and the weekly fish curry is the hottest. Many recommend upgrading to Sri Lankan rice. Kiri pani, yogurt with palm syrup, closes the meal and is often mentioned. English-speaking guests consistently describe the staff as warm.

Most criticism concerns the house rules. Some Japanese reviewers resent that the whole party must be present before anyone is seated, even if that costs a place in the queue. One diner was asked to leave about four minutes after finishing because others were waiting. Two found the food too salty, a few found it milder than expected, and popular dishes sell out early.

Karapincha serves lunch only, with no dinner service. Reviewers in 2024–2026 paid around ¥1,500 for chicken curry and ¥1,600 for shrimp, squid or white-aubergine curry. Sri Lankan rice and a fried egg added about ¥200 each, and a large rice about ¥100–120. With extras, a typical lunch came to ¥2,000–2,400. Reviewers consider it good value: a full plate with six sides plus dessert feels generous, and the price buys real craft.

  • Getting there: 1 minute on foot from Oji-koen Station on the Hankyu Kobe Line, close to Oji Zoo.
  • Hours: the listing gives Thu–Sun 11:00–15:00. Reviewers say it opens only about 12 days a month, so check karapincha.jp or the notice on the shutter before going.
  • Booking: reservations are not accepted, so you simply walk in. Expect a lunchtime queue. Write your name on the board at the door. Your whole party must be present to be seated.
  • Timing: Sri Lankan rice, fish curry and kottu roti (served from 13:30) often sell out, so arrive near opening. Expect to leave promptly after eating when others are waiting.
  • Payment: credit cards are not accepted. Electronic money and QR payments (PayPay) are accepted.
  • Children: there is no children's menu, and the restaurant says it is difficult for children of junior high school age and younger. Strollers are not allowed.
  • Seats: 12 seats: 2 at the counter, three tables for two and one table for four. There are no private rooms and no private hire.
  • Smoking: entirely non-smoking.
  • Parking: none, but there is a paid car park next door.
  • Language and diet: an English menu is available, and vegetarian options are offered.
