Unagi Kappou Kitahachi (うなぎ割烹 きた八) is a celebrated eel restaurant in Nishinomiya, dedicated to the Kansai style of preparation. Unlike the more common Tokyo method which involves steaming, here the eel is grilled directly without steaming. The kitchen uses a special top-down infrared grill, a technique that yields an exceptionally crisp, crackling skin while keeping the flesh within moist and fluffy. This signature texture is the main draw and is praised in nearly every review.
The most popular order is the hitumabushi, a set that invites you to enjoy the eel in several stages: on its own, with condiments like wasabi, and finally with dashi broth poured over it. The plain grilled shirayaki, which showcases the pure flavour and texture of the eel, is also a highlight. Other consistently praised side dishes include kimo-yaki (grilled eel liver), uzaku (vinegared eel and cucumber), and umaki (eel-filled omelette). Service is described as professional and the kitchen maintains high standards even during busy periods.
Some diners find the prices high for the portion sizes—the standard 'nami' portion is often a half-eel. A few guests who prefer the smoky flavour of charcoal grilling found the infrared method less to their taste. Due to its small size, the restaurant can feel cramped and occasionally sells out of eel, closing early.
For lunch, expect to spend between ¥3,000 and ¥3,999, and for dinner, ¥6,000 to ¥7,999. Reviewers recently paid around ¥3,700 for a standard 'nami' hitumabushi, ¥4,450 for an unagi-ju (eel over rice in a box), and ¥6,500 for a larger 'jo' hitumabushi. While not a budget meal, most feel the quality and unique preparation offer good value for a special eel experience.
