comer mar y montana (コメール マル イ モンターニャ) is the casual sister bar of Respiración, Kanazawa's Michelin two-star Spanish restaurant. It gets the same seafood sourcing at bar prices. The draw is paella built on Hokuriku seafood: white shrimp, rock oysters, firefly squid and, in November and December only, kōbako-gani (female snow crab). The seafood is piled so high the rice disappears. You can order à la carte, with half portions, or take a course.
Paella dominates the reviews. The squid-ink, white-shrimp, rock-oyster and crab versions are repeatedly called the best reviewers have eaten. Gambas al ajillo and pil-pil come up often; pil-pil is grilled fish in an emulsified garlic sauce, meant for mopping up with bread. The tortilla won over at least one Spanish visitor. Natural wines and a friendly young team are also mentioned often.
The most common complaint is portion size for the price. Several diners found a half paella at over ¥4,000 small for two. Service can be uneven: one foreign party had to ask three times for water and was left with dirty plates, and some Japanese reviewers found the staff cool or the kitchen slow. The ground floor by the kitchen gets hot and smoky, and a TV sits oddly in the room. A minority found the seasoning heavy or plain.
It is dinner only, typically ¥8,000–10,000 a head. Reviewers in 2024–2026 paid ¥9,680–10,450 for courses. A half paella cost ¥4,300–4,500, a large squid-ink paella ¥7,500 and caldoso (seafood rice soup) ¥5,300. Gambas al ajillo was ¥1,800, pil-pil ¥2,450 and huevos rotos ¥1,000. Cocktails cost ¥780 and wine by the glass started at ¥1,100.
Value is fair rather than cheap. You pay for premium seafood and the paella delivers, but grazing on small plates pushes the bill up quickly.
- Getting there: 5 minutes' walk from the Katamachi stop (Hokutetsu Bus), or about 1,090 m from Nomachi Station. The entrance in Kiguramachi is plain and easy to miss, next to Genzaemon.
- Booking: walking in is not reliable, so book a few days ahead, especially for weekends. Late-evening walk-ins sometimes get a table. Book online or call 050-5590-3886. When booking, mention any shellfish aversion and the time of any train you need to catch. Allergy requests cannot be handled on the day.
- Ordering: courses need at least two people; solo diners order à la carte. One-drink policy. Popular paellas can sell out, so arrive early.
- Payment: cards (Visa, Mastercard, JCB, Amex, Diners), electronic money (Suica and other IC cards, Rakuten Edy, nanaco, WAON, iD, QUICPay) and QR payments (PayPay, d Barai, Rakuten Pay, au PAY) are all accepted.

- Parking: none; there is coin parking nearby.
- Language: an English menu is reported, and some staff speak Spanish or French.
