Hakuichi Higashiyama ten (箔一 東山店) is famous for one thing: it is the originator of the full-sheet gold-leaf soft-serve ice cream. Located in Kanazawa's historic Higashi Chaya district, a centre for gold-leaf craft, this shop offers a unique, photogenic ritual. In front of you, staff take a cone of creamy, milky soft-serve and delicately wrap it in a complete, shimmering sheet of edible gold.

Guests consistently praise this spectacle, and staff encourage taking photos and videos of the process. Beyond the visual appeal, the soft-serve itself is frequently described as rich, smooth, and delicious. The shop also sells a wide range of gold-leaf crafts and souvenirs, and offers seating on its first and third floors.

However, visitors should set their expectations. The gold leaf is purely for show and has no taste, a fact that leads some to feel the price is high for what they consider a tourist gimmick. During busy periods, expect to queue for service and find the upstairs seating full. The stairs to the upper floor can also be tricky to navigate with an ice cream cone in hand.

As an experience, most find it good value. Reviewers in 2024–2026 often paid ¥1,189 for the signature Gold Leaf Kagayaki Soft-Serve (金箔のかがやきソフトクリーム). While perhaps not the best value for flavour alone, the unique ritual and photo opportunity make it a memorable part of a trip to Kanazawa.
