Asahi Honten (あさひ 本店) is an Enoshima institution, famous for one thing: watching a whole octopus get pressed and grilled into a single, face-sized cracker right in front of you. This live spectacle is the main draw, attracting long queues of visitors eager for a unique photo and a fresh, hot snack to eat while exploring the island.
Reviewers consistently praise the maru-yaki tako senbei (whole roasted octopus cracker) for its intensely crispy texture and pronounced seafood flavour when eaten fresh from the press. The shrimp version (ebi senbei) and a blue-tinted whitebait (shirasu) variant are also popular. Many consider it an essential part of the Enoshima food-walk experience.
However, experiences can be inconsistent. Some visitors report receiving crackers that were cold or bland, while a few found them too salty. Several reviews also mention brusque or unfriendly staff and, in isolated cases, concerns about the cleanliness of the equipment. The crackers are extremely fragile and not packed for transport, so they must be eaten immediately.
As a street-food experience, it offers good value. Reviewers in 2024–2026 typically paid around ¥500 for the whole octopus senbei and ¥700 for the blue shirasu cracker, with larger souvenir versions costing about ¥1,100. You order and pay with cash at a vending machine before handing your ticket to the staff.
