Croa (クロア) has earned a devoted following for its mastery of fermentation and lamination. The star of the show is the croissant, praised for its fragile, multi-layered structure and intense butter aroma. Beyond viennoiserie, the bakery excels at long-fermented rustic breads, developing a deep, wheaty flavour that regulars find exceptional. Many items creatively incorporate local Kyoto ingredients, turning savoury breads like the broccoli and white miso-mayonnaise bake into a small meal in themselves.

Visitors consistently rave about the croissant, the mochi-like texture of the Yugone Shokupan loaf, and hard breads like the Tourne, which comes with fillings like fig and walnut or Comté cheese and shichimi pepper. The curry pan (カレーパン) is another popular choice. Despite the high level of craft, most find the prices surprisingly fair. Reviewers in 2024–2026 paid ¥162–¥205 for a croissant and around ¥336 for a fig and walnut Tourne. One visitor's purchase of seven different items came to about ¥2,066.

The main drawback is logistics. Croa is a small, take-out-only shop in the relatively remote, hilly Takagamine district. It frequently sells out, especially on weekends, and some breads like the baguettes don't appear until around 11:00 AM. A few reviews note minor issues like over-browning on some items, but the consensus is that the quality far outweighs any inconvenience.

  • Getting There: The bakery is best reached by car or bus. From Shijo Omiya, take city bus route 6 to the Takamine Kaminomachi stop. It is a considerable walk from the nearest train station.
  • Reservations: While walk-ins are welcome, reserving items for pickup (known as 'torioki' in Japan) is highly recommended to avoid disappointment, as popular items sell out quickly.
  • Payment: Cash only. Credit cards, electronic money, and QR code payments are not accepted.
  • Parking: The bakery has no dedicated parking, but paid coin parking is available nearby.
  • Service: The shop is for take-out only. Staff are friendly and can offer recommendations, with some English spoken.
