With over 140 years of history, Daigokuden Honpo Honten is a revered name in Kyoto's world of traditional sweets (wagashi). While the shopfront offers beautifully packaged gifts, the main draw for many visitors is the serene tearoom at the back, which looks onto a small garden.

The star of the menu is the Kohaku-nagashi (琥珀流し), a delicate, jewel-like dessert made from kanten jelly. Its defining feature is the syrup, which changes monthly to reflect the season, with past flavours including lemon, ume plum, matcha, and even tomato. Reviewers, both Japanese and international, often come specifically for this unique treat, which they recently paid around ¥980 for. Other highly praised items include the fluffy kakigōri (shaved ice), with reviewers paying ¥1,200–¥1,300 for flavours like Uji matcha milk, as well as warabi-mochi and the rich, moist house castella cake.

Criticism is minor and infrequent. Some visitors note that queues can form at peak times. A few found the taste of the Kohaku-nagashi to be intentionally subtle, which may not suit all palates, while a small number of guests reported that service could be matter-of-fact. As with many popular shops, seasonal specials can sell out during the day.

For the quality and craft on display, Daigokuden Honpo Honten offers excellent value. A typical visit for dessert costs between ¥1,000 and ¥1,999. The Kohaku-nagashi provides a unique, repeatable experience for visitors, and the take-home confections are regarded as high-quality Kyoto souvenirs.
