Saikyo Yaki Kyoto Yamaroku (西京焼き 京都やま六) is a small restaurant dedicated to perfecting one dish: saikyo-yaki, fish grilled after being marinated for several days in sweet Kyoto white miso. This multi-day “hon-zuke” method results in an incredibly rich flavour and a buttery, tender texture that has earned it a loyal following.

The star of the menu, praised in nearly every review, is the gindara (black cod). Guests describe it as exceptionally flaky, rich, and perfectly balanced by the sweet miso. Other fish like sawara (Spanish mackerel) and saba (mackerel) also receive high marks. The fish is served as a set meal (teishoku), which turns a simple grilled fillet into a complete Kyoto dining experience. Each set includes four to five small, seasonal side dishes (kobachi) and a bowl of high-quality steamed rice, with free refills available.

While the food quality is high, the space is very limited. The restaurant has only 21 seats, so long waits are common, managed by a numbered ticket system. At peak times, they may stop issuing tickets or sell out entirely. A few reviewers noted occasional service lapses or that the pork dishes were less impressive than the signature fish.

Set meals typically cost between ¥2,000 and ¥3,000. Reviewers recently paid ¥2,600 for the black cod set and around ¥2,180 for the Spanish mackerel set. For the quality of the fish and the complexity of the meal, it offers very good value.

  • Location: In the basement (B1F) of the JR Kyoto Isetan department store, directly connected to JR Kyoto Station.
  • Reservations: Reservations are not accepted. Expect to take a numbered ticket and wait, especially during lunch and dinner hours. Arrive early to avoid long queues or the restaurant selling out.
  • Seating: 21 seats, comprising a counter and two small booths.
  • Payment: Major credit cards (VISA, Master, JCB, AMEX, Diners) and QR code payments (PayPay, Rakuten Pay, etc.) are accepted. Electronic money is not.
  • Service: An English menu is available, and staff are noted for their helpful explanations.
  • Good to know: Stick to the fish dishes, as they are the specialty. The restaurant may close early once it reaches capacity for the day.
