In Kyoto's Nakagyo ward, Menya Takakura Nijou serves one of the city's most distinctive bowls of ramen. It draws crowds for its dense, creamy fish-and-pork broth, lifted by a smoky char and often paired with bright yuzu-infused noodles.

What sets Menya Takakura Nijou (麺や高倉二条) apart in Kyoto's competitive ramen scene is its signature broth: a rich, creamy gyokai-tonkotsu (fish and pork bone) base given a surprising smoky depth from charred scallions. This unique flavour profile, combined with the option of bright, citrusy yuzu-infused noodles and a popular motu (offal) topping, has earned it a loyal following.

Diners, including many international visitors, consistently praise the layered umami of the broth, the tenderness of the char-siu pork and motu, and the perfectly cooked ajitama (marinated soft-boiled egg). The tsukemen (dipping noodles) is also a highlight, served with a small stone pot to keep the dipping broth hot. Many reviewers call it one of Kyoto’s best bowls, with some returning on consecutive nights.

The experience comes with a few practical considerations. The shop is tiny, with only six counter seats, so queues are almost guaranteed. The entrance is discreet and easy to miss. Ordering is done at a tablet kiosk which is effectively cashless, a point of confusion for some visitors. A small minority of reviews mention occasional issues with noodle softness or the tsukemen broth cooling too quickly.

Reviewers in 2024–2026 reported paying around ¥900 for a standard ramen, approximately ¥1,180 for a ramen with an added egg, and ¥1,210 for a large portion of tsukemen. Most meals cost between ¥1,000 and ¥2,000. Diners overwhelmingly find this to be good value for the high quality and distinctive flavours.
