Okuniya Manbei (大國屋鰻兵衞) is a small, focused restaurant dedicated to one thing: charcoal-grilled eel served in the Kansai style. Set in a traditional Kyoto townhouse, or machiya, it offers a single set menu. The main event is unagi grilled directly over charcoal until the skin is crisp and smoky, served alongside rice that is cooked for you in a personal clay pot, or kamado.

Guests consistently praise this signature combination. The eel is described as having perfectly crisped skin while the flesh remains tender and fatty. The rice, cooked to order, is noted for being sweet and glossy. The meal is designed to be enjoyed in three stages: first plain, then with a sweet soy-based tare sauce, and finally as ochazuke, with tea poured over the remaining rice, especially the crispy bits at the bottom of the pot. The attentive service and intimate atmosphere are also frequently commended. Named side dishes include chirimen sansho (dried baby sardines with pepper) and a clam soup.

Diners should be aware that this is a special-occasion meal. Reviewers in 2024–2026 consistently report the single set menu costs ¥7,700 per person, with some couples paying around ¥12,000–¥15,000 for two. While most find the quality justifies the price, some with larger appetites felt the portions were small. A few guests found their eel slightly overcooked or the accompanying soup a little weak.
