Ping Ping (萍萍) is a tiny, counter-seat restaurant in Gion where a Taiwanese 'mama-san' serves up bold, authentic homestyle cooking. The space is cramped and the atmosphere is direct, but the food has earned a loyal following for its unabashedly traditional flavours and generous portions.

The one dish nearly every guest insists you order is the handmade water dumplings (水餃子, suigyōza). Served in a large portion, they are meaty, packed with nira chives, and widely considered a must-try. Other consistently praised dishes include the oyster omelet (牡蠣オムレツ), fried beehoon vermicelli (焼きビーフン), squid meatballs, and a potent garlic-and-shijimi clam preparation. The flavours are authentically Taiwanese, not adjusted for Japanese palates.

However, international visitors must approach with caution. There are several recent reports from non-Japanese reviewers alleging they were asked their nationality and then refused entry or service. Some mention a sign stating that tourists are not accepted. While many Japanese guests describe the owner as warm and lively once you're settled in, her brusque manner can be intimidating, and the seating is very tight.

Dinner typically costs between ¥4,000 and ¥4,999 per person. Reviewers recently paid around ¥1,100 for the signature water dumplings and ¥1,760 for the oyster omelet. Given the portion sizes, many find it good value for money—provided they are able to get a seat and be served.

  • Important Note: International visitors should be aware of multiple recent reports of the restaurant refusing service to non-Japanese guests.
  • Reservations: With only about 11 seats, reservations are highly recommended and can be difficult to secure at peak times.
  • Payment: Cash only. Credit cards, electronic money, and QR code payments are not accepted.
  • Getting There: The restaurant is in Gion, a 1-minute walk from the Gion city bus stop and about 5 minutes from Gion-Shijo Station. It is on the first floor of the Pikkel Building.
  • Atmosphere: A very small counter with one table. Expect a cramped, no-nonsense environment.
  • Smoking: The entire restaurant is non-smoking.
