Sangencha (山玄茶) offers a modern, counter-focused kaiseki experience in the heart of Kyoto's Gion district. While rooted in tradition, the owner-chef brings a playful and imaginative touch to the multi-course meal, creating a warm and hospitable atmosphere that guests frequently praise.
The menu revolves around two signature elements. The first is a series of theatrical seasonal plates, such as matsutake mushrooms in an elegant broth (*dobinmushi*) in autumn or grilled river fish (*ayu*) in summer. The second, and for many the highlight of the meal, is the finale: rice from the chef's home prefecture of Shiga, cooked to perfection in a traditional clay pot (*donabe gohan*). It's served in several styles, from a simple tamago kake gohan (rice with raw egg) to a rich rice-carbonara or topped with grilled eel for *unagi chazuke*. Other consistently praised dishes include delicate sashimi, sometimes served with a creative mascarpone-yuzu sauce.
While most diners report excellent service, a few have found it brusque. It's also worth noting that some non-Japanese guests have been seated in upstairs private rooms rather than at the main counter; if you want to see the chef at work, it's best to request counter seating when booking. Dinner is expensive, with reviewers in 2024–2026 reporting spends around ¥29,150–¥29,700. Lunch is considered excellent value, with courses cited from ¥6,500 to ¥12,650, offering a more accessible way to experience the kitchen's craft.
