A multiple recipient of the Tabelog Ramen WEST "Top 100" award, Seikou Udoku (晴耕雨読) is a standout ramen destination in Uji, specializing in mazesoba, or brothless ramen. It has earned a loyal following for its intense flavours, high-quality ingredients, and house-made noodles, drawing crowds for its limited lunch-only service.
Guests consistently praise two signature bowls. The first is the soupless tantanmen (汁なし担々麺), a rich and complex mix of dense sesame-and-spice meat sauce, roasted cashews, and numbing Sichuan pepper, all served over chewy, house-made flat noodles. The other star is the charcoal-smoked chashu mazesoba (炭火香るチャーシューまぜそば), defined by the powerful, smoky aroma of its generous portion of grilled pork. Portions are large, and many diners order a small bowl of rice to eat with the remaining sauce.
The restaurant's popularity presents challenges. As a small, lunch-only spot, it's in high demand, and popular items can sell out. The standard spice level is potent, so those with a lower tolerance should request it be reduced. The ticket-machine ordering system and lack of an English menu can be confusing for first-time visitors, though some staff may speak basic English. While very rare, there have been isolated reports of brusque service.
Despite the queues, reviewers overwhelmingly consider Seikou Udoku exceptional value. Reviewers in 2024–2026 reported paying around ¥990 for the soupless tantanmen and ¥1,200–¥1,300 for the signature charcoal-smoked chashu mazesoba. Most bowls are in the ¥950–¥1,300 range, a price considered very reasonable for the quality and portion size.
