Sumiyaki Seriu (炭焼 芹生) is a ten-seat counter restaurant dedicated to the art of sumibiyaki, or charcoal grilling. The experience is an intimate omakase where the chef presides over a live fire, transforming seasonal ingredients into a sequence of perfectly cooked dishes. The theatre of the open flame, the aroma of straw smoke, and the chef's precise control over heat are central to the appeal, offering textures and flavours that are hard to find elsewhere.
Guests consistently praise the masterful cooking and thoughtful presentation. The menu changes with the seasons, with reviewers highlighting courses like straw-smoked kinmedai (golden eye snapper), tender Miyazaki ichibo beef, small freshwater fish from Lake Biwa, and inventive dishes like karasumi-mochi (cured mullet roe with rice cake). The hospitality is another strong point; many visitors note the helpful owner and an on-site sake sommelier, describing the service as exceptionally welcoming to foreign guests.
The restaurant's small size and popularity mean that securing a seat can be challenging, with reservations filling up weeks in advance. The intimate counter can occasionally become noisy with larger groups, and the leisurely pace means dinner can last two to three hours. While most guests report excellent service, there has been an isolated report of poor handling of a last-minute booking request.
Reviewers find the experience offers excellent value for the quality of cooking and ingredients. The omakase dinner course was recently reported at ¥13,200 and ¥15,300. However, be aware that drinks can significantly increase the final bill, with some guests paying around ¥19,000–¥20,000 per person in total.
