Chimoto Sohonten Karuizawa honten (ちもと総本店 軽井沢本店) is a long-established house restaurant and sweet shop in the mountain resort town of Karuizawa. It's best known for its signature sweet, the Chimoto Mochi, and for serving kakigori shaved ice year-round, made with natural ice from Karuizawa.
Visitors consistently praise the Chimoto Mochi, a soft gyūhi (a type of mochi) flavored with black sugar and filled with crunchy Shinshu walnuts. Other popular items include the grilled soy sauce dango (yakidango) and simple, satisfying bowls of soba or udon noodles, making it a good spot for a light lunch. The matcha kakigori is also a frequent choice.
However, the experience can be inconsistent. Some guests find the kakigori portions small or hollow for the price, and service can be brusque or forgetful during busy periods. The traditional building has limited air-conditioning, which can make it uncomfortably warm in summer. Most importantly, several non-Japanese reviewers have reported being charged an unannounced 10% surcharge, so it is wise to check your bill carefully before paying.
For the signature sweets, prices are reasonable. Reviewers in 2024 paid around ¥270 for a single Chimoto Mochi, ¥190–¥380 for two pieces of yakidango, and ¥1,050–¥1,150 for kakigori. A typical lunch of soba or udon costs between ¥1,000 and ¥1,999. The mochi and dango are considered good value, while the kakigori receives mixed feedback.
