Fogliolina della Porta Fortuna (フォリオリーナ・デッラ・ポルタ・フォルトゥーナ) is not just a restaurant but a private culinary experience. Located in a house in Karuizawa, it serves only one group of guests per day. Chef Kobayashi presents a singular vision of Italian cuisine, where every dish is meticulously engineered for aroma, temperature, and layered flavour. The experience is intimate and highly narrated, with the chef explaining each course of the multi-hour tasting menu. Most ingredients are sourced directly from Italy, reflecting a deep commitment to authenticity.
Guests consistently praise the meal as a memorable, once-in-a-lifetime event. Dishes that receive repeated acclaim include a rich gorgonzola risotto, perfectly roasted rabbit and pigeon, and an exceptional aged prosciutto. The wine pairings are described as flawless, enhancing a menu that is already at a very high level. The serene garden and terrace setting further adds to the unique atmosphere, especially during the summer 'Alberini' garden party events.
The primary challenge is access. The restaurant is 紹介制 (shōkai-sei), meaning it operates on an introduction-only basis, making reservations for new customers nearly impossible. A small number of diners have found the flavour profile to be heavy or the presentation not to their taste. While some low-star online reviews exist, many appear to be unrelated to actual dining experiences and are linked to a media controversy.
While the restaurant lists a typical spend of ¥40,000–¥49,999, recent reviewers report paying around ¥60,500 for a full tasting menu with wine pairing, with another bill for a similar experience at ¥48,400. The more casual summer 'Alberini' garden lunch costs around ¥33,000. For those who can secure a seat and appreciate technically advanced tasting menus, it offers excellent value; for others, the booking barrier is insurmountable.
