For over a century, Dango Sho Yagi ten (だんご庄 八木店) has dedicated itself to perfecting a single item: kinako dango. This Meiji-era establishment in Kashihara makes its famous rice dumplings by hand, in full view of customers. The small, pillowy dango are brushed with a secret, honey-like syrup and then generously coated in freshly roasted soybean flour (kinako), creating a treat that’s meant to be eaten the very same day.
Guests consistently praise the dango's unique texture—remarkably soft, chewy, yet airy—and the masterful balance between the sweet syrup and the nutty, abundant kinako. Many find them addictive and appreciate the small extra packet of 'tsui-kinako' (追いきな粉) for topping up. The visible handwork of the staff and the shop's long history add to the appeal.
The shop's popularity means it's best to arrive early, as they frequently sell out by mid-afternoon. The dango have a very short shelf life and are best consumed within a few hours of purchase. The storefront is small and can feel crowded, with staff sometimes seeming hurried during peak times.
Value is considered excellent. Reviewers in 2024–2026 consistently reported prices around ¥100 per skewer, with examples like a box of 10 skewers for ¥1,000. For a handmade, high-quality product, this is seen as a bargain.
