GATEAU DES BOIS LABORATOIRE Raboratowāru (ガトー・ド・ボワ ラボラトワール) is the Nara outpost of a world-renowned pastry chef, housed in a building with a deliberately antique, European salon-style interior. The main draw is the patisserie executed to French competition standards, most famously the Ambroisie, the chocolate entremet that won the Coupe du Monde de la Pâtisserie.
Guests consistently praise this signature creation: a glossy chocolate-coated mousse with layers of pistachio bavarois and a raspberry center. Other favorites include pistachio-forward cakes like the Piemonté, and the highly crafted monthly and seasonal specials, such as parfaits featuring fresh peach, melon, or cherry. Reviewers admire the jewel-like presentation and the superb balance of textures and flavors, with many finding the quality justifies the price. The elegant café space and selection of baked goods for gifts are also well-regarded.
However, a significant number of visitors report inconsistent and sometimes brusque service. Complaints mention being asked to wait outside or in their cars even when seats appeared free, staff being curt, and occasional variability in the temperature of cakes or strength of drinks. While many have a perfectly pleasant experience, these recurring issues can detract from the visit.
Expect to spend around ¥1,000–¥1,999 per person. Reviewers in 2024 noted the Ambroisie cake cost around ¥897–¥913, the Piemonté cake was about ¥789, and other creations like the Fr. Pistache cake were priced at ¥770–¥800. A pot of Darjeeling tea was around ¥770.
