Lamp Bar (ランプバー) is the stage for Michito Kaneko, winner of the 2015 World Class Bartender competition. This moody, multi-room bar in Nara operates without a menu, instead crafting bespoke cocktails based on your tastes. The focus is on local ingredients, house-made infusions and vermouths, and theatrical presentation—from the signature 'The Beginning' cocktail served in an egg-shaped vessel to the hand-chiselled ice tailored to each glass.

Guests consistently praise the precise technique and inventive drinks, with house Negronis, custom martinis, and Old Fashioned variations earning high marks. The bartenders are often described as warm, knowledgeable, and happy to converse in English, guiding guests through the creative process. The complimentary nibbles served with the cover charge are also a welcome touch.

However, the experience can be inconsistent. While many foreign visitors have an excellent time, several have reported being refused entry or seated in a back room, with some feeling they were targeted. A few others have found the service brusque or the drinks weaker than expected.

Cocktails typically cost between ¥1,500 and ¥2,200. Reviewers in 2024–2025 reported total bills around ¥4,400 for two drinks plus a cover charge, or ¥6,700 for three. For cocktail enthusiasts, the price is fair for the level of craft, which rivals more expensive bars in Tokyo. However, the risk of being turned away or not getting a seat at the main counter makes it a less certain choice for groups or anyone set on watching the bartenders at work.

  • Getting There: The bar is a 3-minute walk from Kintetsu Nara Station.
  • Booking: Reservations are not accepted. Seating is on a walk-in basis and is not guaranteed, especially for groups.
  • The Experience: There is no menu; bartenders create drinks based on your preferences. It helps to have an idea of what you like (e.g., spirit, flavour profile).
  • Payment: Credit cards (JCB, AMEX, Diners) are accepted. Electronic money and QR code payments are not.
  • Charges: A cover charge of ¥550 per person applies, which includes a small snack.
  • Seating: The bar has 36 seats, including a main counter and several separate rooms. Private rooms are available.
  • Smoking: A separate smoking room is available.
  • Parking: No parking available.
