Miyake Kyukounoiketei Omoteya (みやけ 旧鴻池邸表屋) is not just a café, but an experience. It is housed in a beautifully preserved 200-year-old merchant's residence from the Edo period, relocated to this spot in Nara, offering views of a traditional garden. The main draw is its kakigori: gigantic mounds of finely shaved ice, so fluffy and well-soaked that the flavour lasts to the very last spoonful.
Guests consistently praise the generous portions and the deep, complex flavours of the house-made syrups. Popular choices include the Uji Milk Kin-toki (matcha with milk and sweet red beans), Mango Milk, and seasonal fruit varieties. Beyond shaved ice, the parfaits, such as the matcha or kuromitsu kinako (brown sugar syrup and roasted soybean flour) versions, and traditional wagashi sets are also highly regarded. Many reviewers describe it as a bargain, with quality and portions far exceeding the price.
The café's popularity means you should be prepared for a wait. In high season, queues can be long, managed by a numbered ticket system (整理券, seiriken) at the gate. While a QR code system allows you to monitor your place, it's best to arrive with time to spare. A few guests have noted that seasonal items can sell out, and the tatami mat seating and steep stairs may pose a challenge for those with mobility issues.
Reviewers in 2024–2026 reported paying around ¥950–¥1,230 for kakigori; examples include Mango Milk for ~¥1,120 and Uji Milk Kin-toki for ~¥1,190. Parfaits were around ¥1,000–¥1,100, and the 'Miyake Set' with sweets and a drink was about ¥1,045.
