Naramachi Tofu-an Kondo (奈良町豆腐庵 こんどう) offers a focused exploration of one of Japan’s most fundamental ingredients: tofu. Set inside a beautifully restored 180-year-old wooden townhouse (machiya) with a small garden, the restaurant provides a calm, traditional backdrop for its multi-course meals. The experience is a celebration of fresh soy, showcasing its subtle flavours and textures in a variety of forms.

Guests consistently praise the quality and variety of the preparations. The star is often the dōnyū yudōfu, a soy-milk hot pot gently heated at your table, from which you can scoop delicate, freshly forming skins of yuba. Other highlights include fragrant, grilled thick-fried tofu (nama-atsuage) and skewers of miso-glazed grilled tofu (dengaku). Reviewers note that the staff are helpful, often providing an English menu and explaining how to best enjoy each course.

While the food is widely admired, some diners note practical issues. The small restaurant fills up quickly, and some felt rushed by staff clearing dishes near closing time. A few reviewers also mention that many dishes use dashi (fish stock), so the menu is not strictly vegetarian or vegan without special requests.

The restaurant is considered good value. Lunch sets recently cost between ¥2,100 for a dengaku set and ¥2,600 for a larger combination course. An evening tofu kaiseki was reported at around ¥4,000. Typical spend is ¥2,000–¥2,999 for lunch and ¥4,000–¥4,999 for dinner.

  • Booking: Reservations are strongly recommended, as the restaurant often fills up, particularly for dinner and on weekends. Walk-ins may be possible on weekdays if you arrive early.
  • Getting There: The restaurant is a 10-minute walk from Kintetsu Nara Station or a 15-minute walk from JR Nara Station.
  • Payment: Bring cash. Credit cards and electronic money are not accepted. QR code payments via PayPay are accepted.
  • Seating: Seating is at tables or in private tatami rooms; you will need to remove your shoes upon entry.
  • Dietary Notes: While the menu is tofu-focused, many dishes contain dashi (fish stock). If you require strictly vegan or vegetarian food, you must inquire with the staff.
  • Children: Children of all ages are welcome.
