Shorai offers a dining experience that feels like being welcomed into a private home. Housed in a renovated traditional townhouse (machiya) in Nara, the restaurant's rooms are arranged around a tranquil garden with a 300-year-old pine tree at its centre. This intimate setting is the backdrop for its specialty: Japanese hotpot, or nabe.

Guests consistently praise the signature hotpots. The Asuka nabe, a local Nara speciality, features a creamy chicken broth made with milk and either miso or sake lees (sakekasu). Another favourite is the rich and savoury uni nabe, made with sea urchin. A highlight for many is the finish, where the remaining flavourful broth is used to cook a delicious risotto right at your table. The attentive host, who often tries to explain the dishes in English, and the availability of small plates like deer sausage also receive frequent mentions.

A few practical points recur in reviews. The restaurant can be strict about its policies: reservations are required, payment is cash-only, and a mandatory cover charge applies. The traditional building has steep stairs and tatami-mat seating, which may pose a challenge for guests with mobility issues. A very small number of visitors have also noted inconsistent seasoning or brusque service.

Dinner typically costs between ¥4,000 and ¥4,999 per person. For specific dishes, reviewers in 2024–2025 paid ¥2,000 for the Renge nabe and around ¥3,000 for the Uni nabe. Expect a cover charge (お通し, otsumami) of ¥500–¥1,000. Most find it excellent value, given the unique recipes and memorable atmosphere.

  • Booking: Reservations are required and can be made by phone or Facebook Messenger. Some nabe dishes must be ordered in advance.
  • Payment: Cash only. Credit cards, electronic money, and QR code payments are not accepted.
  • Access: An 8-minute walk from Kintetsu Nara Station (Exit 1). Parking is available.
  • Seating: The restaurant has traditional tatami seating and steep stairs. If you have mobility concerns, mention this when booking to request appropriate seating. Private rooms are available.
  • Age Restriction: No children are allowed.
  • Language: Service is primarily in Japanese, though the staff make an effort to communicate with non-Japanese guests.
