Yoshikawa Tei (吉川亭) is a one-man show, a small Nara restaurant dedicated to a handful of classic Western-style Japanese dishes, or yoshoku. The chef, who reportedly trained at the high-end ryokan Kikusuiro, has run this kitchen for decades. The experience is as much about the ritual as the food: guests are expected to follow a set of house rules, including collecting their own plates from the kitchen counter and returning them after their meal.
The star of the extremely limited menu is the hamburger steak. Reviewers consistently praise its juicy, meat-forward texture and the deep, complex flavour of the traditional demi-glace sauce it's served with. The beef stew earns similar acclaim. Portions are generous, often with a large serving of rice and carefully prepared, buttery vegetables that belie the restaurant's modest appearance and prices.
This focus on food comes at the expense of service. The owner is notoriously gruff and has been known to scold or hurry diners he deems too loud or slow. The restaurant is small, the rules are strict, and the interactions can be abrupt, leading to some very mixed reviews. This is a place for quiet, solo diners who want to eat well and leave, not for social gatherings. A few guests have also noted the interior can feel dated, with some mentioning dust and a Japanese-style squat toilet.
The value, however, is undisputed. Reviewers in 2025–2026 reported paying around ¥1,500 for the hamburger steak set, with some earlier reports citing prices as low as ¥1,000. The beef stew set is typically around ¥2,000. For cooking of this quality, these prices are considered a bargain.
- Getting There: The restaurant is a short walk (around 280 metres) from Kintetsu Nara Station.
- Booking: Walk-ins are standard, but expect a queue during the short lunch window. Arrive early, as popular items can sell out. Reservations may be possible by phone but are not the norm.
- Payment: Cash only. Credit cards, electronic money, and QR code payments are not accepted.
- The Experience: This is a one-chef operation with strict rules. Diners fetch their own water, collect their finished plates from the counter, and return them. It is best suited for solo or quiet diners.
- Menu: The menu is very limited, usually offering just a hamburger steak set, a chicken cheese katsu set, and sometimes beef stew.
- Parking: No parking is available.
- Facilities: Be aware that some guests have reported the toilet is a Japanese-style squat toilet.
