Osaka Tenmangu Sushi Toyonaga (大阪天満宮 鮨とよなが) is less a restaurant and more a stage for its chef-patron. The experience, which diners call the "Toyonaga theatre," is built around his lively, joke-filled service at the intimate 10-seat counter. The star of the show is the anago (conger eel), served piping hot in two distinct preparations — one with salt, one with tare sauce — so soft that reviewers consistently describe it as melting in the mouth.

The omakase course is long and satisfying, built on high-quality seasonal ingredients. Guests frequently praise the precise preparation of dishes like ankimo (monkfish liver), sardine seaweed rolls, and various uni (sea urchin). The shari (sushi rice), made with red vinegar and served slightly warm, is another highlight. The meal is punctuated by excellent soups and inventive small plates.

However, the atmosphere divides opinion. While many love the chef's banter, some find it intrusive or feel that regulars receive preferential, chatty treatment. A few have also noted a brusque manner when phoning to make changes. The main challenge, however, is securing a seat, with waits of one to two years being common.

The omakase course is fixed, with reviewers in 2024–2026 paying ¥37,000. With drinks, the final bill often landed between ¥43,000 and ¥45,000. Most diners feel the price represents good value for the quality and entertainment, though some long-time patrons feel that value has diminished with recent price increases. A popular takeaway anago bento was also mentioned at around ¥6,000.

  • Booking: Reservation is mandatory and extremely difficult, with waits often exceeding a year. Check the chef's Instagram or the TableCheck platform for rare cancellation slots.
  • Getting There: The restaurant is on the ground floor, a 1-minute walk from Osakatemmangu Station or Osaka Tenmangu Shrine.
  • Seating: There are 10 counter seats only, with two seatings per night (17:30 and 20:30).
  • Payment: Major credit cards (Visa, Master, JCB, Amex, Diners) are accepted. Electronic money and QR code payments are not.
  • Age Restriction: Children are only permitted if they are able to eat the full adult omakase course.
  • Language: Service is conducted primarily in Japanese; do not expect English menus or guidance.
  • Smoking: The entire restaurant is non-smoking.
  • Parking: No dedicated parking, but paid parking is available nearby.
