Abondance is a destination pâtisserie in Hamamatsu, helmed by its French owner-chef from Alsace. The shop is renowned for its intricate mousse-based cakes and the unique experience of having the pâtissier himself explain each creation to customers. This personal touch is a highlight for many visitors, offering a glimpse into the craft behind the jewel-like pastries.
The signature cake is the 'Supreme' (シュープレーム), a delicate construction of high-vanilla mousse and dacquoise that wins consistent praise. Other favourites include the crème brûlée, which is caramelised to order for a perfect finish, silky seasonal fruit tarts like the tarte aux figues, and flavourful macarons. Reviewers consistently describe the cakes as both beautiful and technically precise.
Be aware that portions are considered small for the price, with some reviewers describing them as 'tiny'. As a popular spot, key items often sell out early in the day, so an early arrival is recommended. While many appreciate the owner's direct manner, a minority of visitors have found the service to be brusque.
A typical spend is between ¥1,000 and ¥1,999. Reviewers recently paid around ¥680 for the signature 'Supreme' cake, ¥680 for the crème brûlée, ¥770 for a mille-feuille, and ¥690 for a fig tart (tarte aux figues). Macarons are also available and noted as being pricey but excellent.
