Maison KEI is a collaboration between Kei Kobayashi, the first Japanese chef to earn three Michelin stars in France, and the historic wagashi maker Toraya. Located in a tranquil part of Gotemba, the restaurant occupies a beautifully renovated house with large windows that frame a Japanese garden and, on clear days, the iconic silhouette of Mount Fuji.

The cuisine is ingredient-focused French, with a clear star of the show: the 'Jardin de Légumes', a salad of over 30 local vegetables, herbs, and flowers artfully mixed at the table with a lemon foam. Reviewers consistently describe it as a singular dish worth travelling for. Other highly praised courses include the perfectly crispy-skinned kinmedai (golden eye snapper) and low-temperature roasted pigeon, showcasing delicate textures and layered sauces. Desserts, created with Toraya, often feature refined takes on classics like vacherin or financiers filled with anko (sweet red bean paste).

While the food receives near-universal acclaim, some guests note downsides. The final bill can be significantly higher than the course price due to extra charges for items like bottled water, coffee, and premium main course selections, which are not always clearly communicated. Service can occasionally feel brusque, and the meal pacing can be slow, often lasting two to three hours. English explanations may also be inconsistent.

Course prices are for the quality. Reviewers in 2024–2026 reported paying around ¥9,800 for the 'VOYAGE' menu and ¥14,000 for the 'PRESTIGE', with other options up to ¥19,000. Be aware of add-ons: upgrading to pigeon can cost an extra ¥3,600, a wine pairing might be around ¥9,900, and even coffee or bottled water can add over ¥1,200 each. Most agree the experience is excellent value, but it's wise to confirm all optional charges upfront.

  • Booking: Reservations are essential and must be made well in advance. Bookings open 60 days out and can be made online or by phone. A reservation is required for entry.
  • Getting There: The most convenient way to arrive is by car or taxi (about 15 minutes from JR Gotemba Station). Alternatively, a bus from the station to the 'Higashiyama Kyukintei-mae' stop takes about 6 minutes.
  • Payment: Major credit cards (Visa, Master, JCB, Amex, Diners, UnionPay) are accepted. Electronic money and QR code payments are not.
  • Dress Code: A smart casual dress code is recommended. Men are asked to refrain from wearing shorts, sandals, or sports caps.
  • Children: Children are welcome. However, if they are not eating the full course menu, the party must book a private room.
  • Private Rooms: Private and semi-private rooms are available for an additional fee of ¥5,500.
  • Charges: A 10% service charge is added to the final bill. Note that water and post-meal coffee/tea are charged separately.
  • Parking: Free parking is available on-site.
