Set within a bamboo-lined garden in Higashiyama, Gotemba, Toraya Kobo (とらや工房) is a working workshop and teahouse from one of Japan's most revered confectioners. The main draw is the building itself, a celebrated glass-and-wood structure by architect Naitō Hiroshi, where you can watch artisans craft traditional sweets (wagashi) by hand. Guests then enjoy them on an open-air terrace overlooking the serene landscape.
The signature item, a Gotemba-exclusive dorayaki, is consistently praised for its soft pancake and high-quality azuki bean paste. Other favorites include seasonal specials like chestnut mochi (栗もち, kurimochi), refreshing anmitsu, and matcha-flavored shaved ice (kakigori). The sencha tea service, which includes generous refills, is another highlight for many visitors.
The teahouse's popularity means that its most sought-after items often sell out by midday, particularly on weekends, and queues are common. A few guests find some sweets too bitter or sweet for children's palates. The approach through the garden includes gravel paths, which may be difficult for visitors with wheelchairs or large strollers.
Most reviewers find the prices to be excellent value for the quality and unique atmosphere. Reviewers in 2024–2026 typically spent ¥1,000–¥1,999. A single dorayaki was around ¥380, a set with sencha tea cost about ¥630–¥680, and a seasonal chestnut mochi was ¥460.
