Shimizu Ko Minami does one thing: tuna on rice. The fish is wild southern bluefin landed at Yaizu port. The signature bowl layers ōtoro (fattiest belly), chūtoro (medium-fat), akami (lean), lightly seared marinated tuna and minced tuna over seasoned sushi rice. It comes with freshly grated wasabi and a choice of regular or sweet soy sauce. Reviewers say the sweet soy is the better match.

Almost every review praises the thick, fresh cuts that melt in the mouth, with no fishy taste. Tuna enthusiasts single out the comparison bowl, which sets southern bluefin against Pacific bluefin. The house wasabi gets frequent mentions. The room is lively and staff greet guests loudly, and several visitors came back a second time on the same trip.

The criticisms are fairly consistent. Popular bowls sell out early, and the limited Pacific bluefin bowl can be gone before you reach the door. Some find the room cramped and a little worn. Service is uneven: some staff come across as curt, and one Korean diner felt he got less explanation than other guests. There were isolated complaints about sinewy ōtoro, coarse wasabi and instructions being called out noisily.

Lunch and dinner use the same bowl menu. Reviewers in 2025–2026 paid:

  • ¥1,950 for the signature premium wild southern bluefin bowl (特選 天然南まぐろ丼)
  • ¥1,680 for the three-cut southern bluefin bowl or the mixed-species tuna bowl
  • ¥2,480–2,600 for the bluefin comparison bowl
  • ¥1,480 for the lean tuna tekkadon
  • ¥300 for two extra slices

Expect ¥1,000–2,000 at lunch and roughly ¥4,000–5,000 at dinner with beer and side dishes. The value is outstanding. Japanese reviewers reckon comparable tuna costs ¥3,500–6,000 or more in Tokyo, and portions are generous.

  • Getting there: about 3 minutes (216 m) on foot from the South Exit of JR Shizuoka Station. The restaurant is on the 2nd floor.
  • Hours: lunch is served only Sun–Tue and dinner only Wed–Sat. Closures are announced on Twitter and Instagram.
  • Age restriction: evenings are adults only, and children are not admitted. Children are welcome at lunch.
  • Booking: lunch cannot be reserved and is walk-in only. Expect 15–60 minutes in the queue on the outside stairs, which starts before 11:00 and moves fast. Dinner can be booked on 054-288-0232. Booking is not required, but it is recommended, and waits are short or nil. Every diner must order a bowl.
  • Queue rules: your whole party must be present before you go in. Queue up the emergency stairs, not the elevator. If the line reaches the street, queue along the building towards the intersection. Leave by the elevator.
  • Payment: Visa, Mastercard, JCB and AMEX are accepted, as are transport IC cards (Suica), iD, QUICPay and QR payments. One visitor was told cash only, so carry some yen.
  • Seating: 28 seats (12 at the counter, 16 at tables). There are no private rooms, but the restaurant can be hired privately for up to 20 people.
  • Smoking: entirely non-smoking.
  • Parking: none. Paid parking is nearby, with a sign for the affiliated lot.
  • Language: an English menu is reported.
  • Alternative: the sister shop Yaizu Ko Minami (焼津港 みなみ) is on the north side of the station.
