Tanimoto (多仁本) is a compact, counter-only kaiseki restaurant in Kagurazaka where the focus is squarely on seasonal ingredients and expert charcoal grilling. The experience is an intimate one, with just eight seats facing the chef's station. Guests watch as long, generous courses are prepared, often featuring uncommon ingredients like tiger puffer shirako (milt), premium sea urchin (uni), Matsuba crab, and occasionally even wild game like moon bear or soft-shell turtle.
Reviewers consistently praise the restaurant's dedication to seasonality and the chef's precise control over the charcoal fire. Standout dishes frequently mentioned include a rich tiger puffer shirako porridge, various preparations of uni, golden-eye snapper (kinmedai) shabu-shabu, and steamed eel (iimushi). The meal's signature finale is a series of different rice dishes cooked in a traditional earthen pot (donabe gohan), which many regulars return for monthly. The house-made kuzukiri (arrowroot noodle dessert) is also a highlight, and the sake and wine pairings are well-regarded.
While overwhelmingly positive, a few reviews note some practical points. The small, counter-focused room can become warm and smoky from the charcoal grill. A handful of international visitors have also reported that explanations of the dishes can be minimal, feeling that Japanese-speaking guests received more detailed attention.
The omakase (chef's choice) course costs around ¥30,000 to ¥33,000, with a separate 10% service charge. With drinks, most diners report a final bill in the ¥30,000 to ¥40,000 per person range. Despite the high price point, most guests feel Tanimoto offers excellent value, given the quality of the ingredients, the variety of dishes, and the generous portions.
