Toho Yushusai Nuwara Eliya (東方遊酒菜ヌワラエリヤ) is a pioneer of “Kyushu Lanka,” a regional interpretation of Sri Lankan curry that has become a Fukuoka specialty. Instead of a single curry, dishes are multi-component plates where chicken, dal, and vegetable curries are served together to be mixed as you eat. The house style is built on a sharp, layered spice balanced with coconut milk, a flavour profile many regulars describe as addictive.

Guests consistently praise the signature Sri Lankan Curry and the Noodle Curry, which uses rice vermicelli (biifun). The dinner-only Rasa Bojun is a larger multi-curry plate that showcases the kitchen's range. The lunch set, which includes a main curry, salad, dessert, and Sri Lankan tea, is widely considered generous and a highlight. The relaxed, book-lined interior adds to the restaurant's long-running appeal. The main point of criticism is also its main feature: the heat. The food can be very spicy, and the ‘Real Red’ level is considered extreme even by seasoned diners. A few reviewers have also mentioned occasional inconsistencies, such as lukewarm plates or service that felt rushed.

The value, especially at lunch, is excellent. Reviewers recently paid around ¥1,050–¥1,350 for lunch sets, with the Noodle Curry at ¥1,200. Dinner plates like the Rasa Bojun were seen for ¥1,680–¥1,800. Typical spending is ¥1,000–¥1,999 for lunch and ¥2,000–¥2,999 for dinner.

  • Booking: Walk-ins are welcome and expected for lunch (reservations are not accepted 11:30–17:00). Reservations are available for dinner but are not essential.
  • Getting There: The restaurant is on the 2nd floor of the Tsuruta Keyaki Building in Akasaka. It's a 12-minute walk from Akasaka Station (Subway Airport Line) or a 2-minute walk from the "Kego-machi" Nishitetsu bus stop.
  • Payment: Cash and QR code payments (PayPay, Rakuten Pay, etc.) are accepted. Credit cards (Visa, Master, JCB, Amex) are only accepted for bills over ¥3,000. Electronic money is not accepted.
  • Spice Level: The food is famously spicy. You can request a milder version, but be cautious when ordering higher levels.
  • Children: Children are welcome, but the restaurant notes that most dishes are very spicy.
  • Practical Details: The entire restaurant is non-smoking. There is no on-site parking, but paid parking is available nearby.
