In a rustic house nestled in the mountains of Dazaifu, Sanzo offers a elemental dining experience: grilling your own premium chicken over a charcoal hearth, or irori, set into your table. The restaurant specializes in fresh, local jidori (free-range chicken), which guests cook using a two-step method guided by staff—a light sear first, then cut into pieces and finished in a savory sauce.

The signature jidori, available seasoned with salt (shio) or a sweet-savory glaze (tare), is the main event and receives consistent praise for its firm texture and deep flavor. Other highly recommended dishes include the three-kind chicken sashimi platter (tori-sashi), the aptly named “phantom” chicken wings (maboroshi no tebasaki), and house-made Sanzo sausages. Many diners round out the meal with a comforting bowl of oyakodon (chicken and egg over rice).

While the food is widely loved, be prepared for the atmosphere. The charcoal grilling produces a great deal of smoke, and reviewers frequently note that the ventilation is poor. Your clothes and hair will pick up the smell, and it can become uncomfortably warm in the summer. A minority of non-Japanese visitors have also reported brusque service from the owner, though most domestic reviews are positive.

Reviewers in 2024–2026 reported paying around ¥2,500 for the Yamagura Gozen lunch set, ¥1,500 for a plate of jidori for grilling, and ¥1,529 for the chicken sashimi trio. Most find it to be excellent value for the quality and generous portions. Expect to spend ¥2,000–¥3,000 for lunch and ¥3,000–¥4,000 for dinner.

  • Booking: Reservations are strongly recommended, as the restaurant is popular and certain dishes can sell out. Seating is limited to 2 hours (90 minutes for weekday lunch).
  • Getting There: From Dazaifu Station, take the Mahoroba-go bus to the Uchiyama stop (by Kamado Shrine) and walk 2 minutes. Parking is available, but the access road is narrow.
  • Payment: Major credit cards (Visa, Master, JCB, Amex, Diners) and PayPay are accepted. Electronic money is not.
  • Atmosphere: The dining room is very smoky due to the charcoal grills. This may be uncomfortable in hot weather.
  • Seating: Seating is available at a counter, at tables with hearths, and on an open terrace.
  • Children: Children are welcome.
  • Smoking: A designated smoking area is available.
