Founded in 1922, Oshokuji Dokoro Kasano Ya (お食事処 かさの家) is a beloved institution on the approach to Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, specializing in one of the area's most famous treats: ume-gae mochi. You can watch the staff expertly grill the rice cakes through a glass window before buying them piping hot to eat right away or take with you.

The main attraction is the ume-gae mochi itself. Reviewers consistently praise the texture: a thin, crisp grilled exterior that gives way to a soft, chewy mochi cake filled with a generous amount of smooth, not-too-sweet azuki bean paste. For those wanting to rest their feet, there is a small tatami-floored tea room overlooking a tranquil garden where you can enjoy your mochi with complimentary hot tea. Sets including matcha are also available.

While highly regarded, some visitors note that the ume-gae mochi here is quite similar to that of other vendors along the same street, so it may not stand out as uniquely different. A few also find the filling a little sweet for their taste. A common piece of advice is to let the cake cool for a moment, as the hot filling can easily burn your mouth.

This is an excellent value stop. Reviewers in 2024–2026 paid ¥180 for a single ume-gae mochi and around ¥700 for a set with matcha tea. A five-pack for takeaway costs ¥900, and other sweets like kuzumochi are available for around ¥800. The typical spend is well under ¥1,000, making it an affordable and satisfying break during a day of sightseeing.

  • Booking: Reservations are not accepted. Expect to queue during peak hours, but the line for takeaway moves quickly.
  • Getting There: The shop is a 4-minute walk from Nishitetsu Dazaifu Station.
  • Seating: There is a small indoor seating area with tatami mats where you must remove your shoes.
  • Payment: Credit cards (Visa, Master, JCB, Amex, Diners, UnionPay), electronic money (transportation IC cards like Suica, Rakuten Edy, iD), and QR code payments (PayPay, Alipay, WeChat Pay) are all accepted.
  • Children: Children are welcome.
  • Takeaway: Available for single cakes and boxed sets.
  • Note: Be careful when eating the freshly made mochi, as the filling is extremely hot.
