Asahikawa Ramen Aoba Honten (旭川らぅめん青葉 本店) is a landmark institution, serving one of the city's definitive bowls of ramen since 1947. Its specialty is a classic Asahikawa-style shoyu ramen built on a "W-soup" — a complex broth blending pork and chicken stock with a seafood base of fish and konbu. A thin layer of lard on top is a regional signature, trapping steam to keep the soup piping hot in Hokkaido's cold climate.

The experience itself is part of the draw. Guests first enter a small waiting room next to the main dining area, where the long-serving 'okami-san' (matron) takes orders before you're seated. Reviewers consistently praise the 正油 (shoyu) ramen for its deep yet balanced umami, complemented by thin, wavy noodles that cling perfectly to the soup. The chashu pork is noted for being tender and flavorful. While shoyu is the star, the shio (salt) and miso versions also receive positive mentions. Many international visitors highlight the warm, personal hospitality from the elderly owners, which makes the experience memorable despite the language barrier.

First-timers should be aware of the shop's quirks. The two-room ordering system can be confusing, and the staff often speak only Japanese, calling out order numbers in Japanese. The shop is very popular and frequently sells out, closing its doors well before the posted time. While the vast majority of reviews describe the service as welcoming, a few isolated reports mention brusque treatment.

For the quality, prices are very modest. Reviewers in 2024–2026 paid around ¥950 for the shoyu ramen and ¥1,100 for a version with extra chashu. With a typical spend under ¥1,000 for lunch or dinner, it's considered excellent value.
