Gyo Sai (魚菜) is a small, focused izakaya that has earned a loyal following for its dedication to two things: pristine Hokkaido seafood and premium sake. Rather than a sprawling menu, the kitchen concentrates on perfectly executed dishes that highlight the quality of the local catch, including thick-cut sashimi and less common fish like hakkaku (sailfin poacher).
The main attraction for many guests is the synergy between the food and the drink. The sashimi platter (本日のお刺身盛り合わせ), which reviewers recently paid around ¥1,600 per person for, is consistently praised. This is often paired with one of the sake tasting sets, such as the three-pour daiginjo comparison for ¥1,600 or the standard tasting set for ¥1,100. The restaurant makes exploring easy with many half-glass pours available from ¥400–¥650, allowing guests to sample premium labels without committing to a full bottle. Other popular small plates include the assorted appetizers (酒菜の盛り合わせ, ~¥1,600) and simmered octopus (たこの桜煮, ~¥900).
The most common point of criticism is the slow pace of service. With a very small kitchen staff, there can be long waits between dishes, making it a place for a leisurely meal, not a quick one. The space is small and quiet, better suited for solo diners or small groups than boisterous gatherings. While most find it good value for the quality, a few felt the portions were small for the price. A typical dinner costs between ¥6,000 and ¥8,000.
